On average, a person in the UK spends £300 on coffee every year and it is one of the most popular beverages across the world. One of the most popular cups of coffee is an espresso, many people are buying espresso pods for the home as they provide high-quality coffee quickly and at an affordable price. Espresso pods are the most sustainable method of consumption. Read more below to find out how these coffee pods are being recycled.

How Does the Process Work?
Coffee pods are recycled by first separating the coffee pod materials from the used coffee grounds. The plastic from the pods is processed into plastic pellets which can be used for top-grade plastic-based items including certain types of furniture. This also helps to decrease our global footprint something we at Espresso @ Home are striving towards.
How Can You Recycle Coffee Pods at Home?
At Espresso @ Home, we support many different brands. One of them being Nespresso, they created the service called Pod back. This was created since the UK’s existing waste infrastructure could not sort and process the coffee pods and therefore, whilst technically ‘recyclable’, they could not be effectively recycled until the creation of Pod back.
The process allows you at home to order a recycling bag with your espresso order and you can then fill the bag up to a maximum of 45 used coffee pods. You then seal the bag and you can then arrange a return with them and they are then collected. This way, you can be sure that your coffee pods are being recycled instead of contributing to polluting the earth.

Why is Plastic Used Instead of a Bio-Degradable Material?
Although it is well-known that high plastic usage is not great for the environment, it is still used in coffee pods because the plastic helps to conserve the fresh coffee taste a lot better than other materials. The use of plastic is also down to the fact that these pods need to withstand going into the pod coffee machine.
Some materials may not cope with the pressure and the pods would then burst, causing a mess everywhere and possible damage to your coffee pod machine. If your machine is damaged, however, our specialists at Espresso @ Home will be sure to get it fixed in no time at an affordable price. The plastic used in these coffee pods can be recycled and we need to be conscious of the carbon footprint of coffee.
